Air intake problem

On my 318i E36, I get a warbling sensation when the
revs rise above 4k on the tachometer. It feels as if
the engine is getting too much air and it causes a
large flat spot in the engine. It doesn't happen all
the time but that makes it worse because you never
know what will happen when you floor it. Any ideas?
