Starting problem

I have a '90 325iC...lately, I've been having problems starting the car. The 
starter sounds fine and always fires, but the car does not actually turn over 
until after I have held the starter cranking and usually pumping the gas 
pedal helps. A mechanic friend of mine said that the fuel injection system 
has a problem and to take it to my local shop. But before I do that, is it 
possible that it could be something small and fixable myself? Please let me 
know. Thanks!
