RE: Early 90's Automatic Trans.

In Manual mode, and the shift selector in D or 3, the transmission
will be forced into third gear and the torque converter will lock up;
with the selector in 2 (or 1), the transmission will be forced into
second (or first) gear. If the car is moving fast when this is done,
the transmission is smart enough to delay the shift until it is safe.

As the name implies, that lets the driver shift manually. In
particular, you can force a downshift for cornering or an upshift for
starting on slippery roads. I've also used the MD combination to force
a downshift to third while climbing a long, steep grade or in
preparation to passing at Interstate speeds.

I've noticed some of the automatic transmissions in E34's have a
switch
next to the gear selector for Manual or Automatic mode? What does this
do and how are does the is affect performance? Any web pages
discussion
this feature? Thanks in advance,
