RE: e28 Temp gauge creeps up

Fan clutch.  They cost about $50.  You'll need a 32mm wrench and a 10mm
socket.  The fan screws on to the water pump (you probably already did all
this) with a reverse thread.  Take it off again and replace the clutch part
(the center of the fan).
