e39 540 wheels on e28 535i?

Group, 

I located a set of e39 540i wheels that are practically being given away
and I would like to know if anyone has put these on an e28 before. I dont
know the offset on these wheels (which is my first question), they are the
17x8 and 17x9. I plan on getting H&R springs for the car (anyone have any
for sale???).

Also, what is the largest tire size that will fit on these cars with rolling.
