Hey Scott.  To remove the tranny top bolt on your e28 you need to get a long 
extension and go right along the top of the tranny with it.  We're talking 
like 2.5 feet here.  A universal joint at the end with the socket does the 
trick.  This will give you enough length to clear the tranny output shaft to 
allow your ratchet to turn.  Of course, the rear tranny mount should be 
removed and the tranny should be resting on the cross bar.  This will give 
you the clearence you need.
