Very concerned...need help!

Digesters,

My 1995 540iA during extreme acceleration (80 km to 140 km) wants to
stall..!

This has happened on two occasions, 

1. When the car was quite cold.

2. More recently under normal conditions.

The display shows a "Red - Check engine" indicator as the car refuses to
respond.  It does recuperate but it feels like it wants to stall prior
to releasing pedal.  

During a pervious service I mentioned it to my tech. who diagnosed and
came back with error code #16.  He suspects it could be the oxygen
sensor - any thoughts??
