How long do shocks last? <E36>

How long should the original factory shocks last?  I have a 1993 325i with
factory sports package, driven mainly on freeways and good roads.
Which shocks were used in the sports package?  Are those a good choice for
replacement, or would aftermarket be better?  I don't want to degrade the
ride.  I do some autocrossing, but don't want to optimize the car for
autocross at the expense of street performence and ride.
