E36 M3 differences

Dear propeller heads:

I am thinking about upgrading from my '94 325I (55k mi., 17" wheels, RD
suspension, chipped, euro lights, etc.) to a late model E36 M3 (manual).
I'm on a list for an E46 M3, but want something now to tide me over.  What
are the differences in the '97 to '99 model years?  What years was the M3
sedan available?  Any comparative comments would be appreciated.
