<E28> Engine rebuilding and upgrading

I own an alpine white E28 which sometime in the next twelve months is going to
need to undergo engine surgery, to wit: at least a head rebuild, perhaps a
complete engine overhaul.

The car IS worth it; it's my personal daily driver and I can find no
justification for changing vehicles. This car, considering its age, is amazing
in its blend of size, power, handling, and reliability. I grin every time I
drive it.

I want to start gathering opinion and information on rebuilding a big six
engine. My purpose is to learn what is available to increase the output of the
engine, without stating an end objective and without sacrificing engine
durability or going completely nuts, ala turbocharger. What is available/what
have you done/what have you seen, etc. Things like overbore information,
higher compression pistons, and use of different intake components, injectors,
or any other changes to the engines basic factory design. I want to bring the
engine back to factory specs and more.. 'tweaking' the basic package. Is a cam
change called for? Are higher performance valves, etc. available? Any
recommendations as to crankshaft changes, modifications, etc.? Does the engine
respond to porting or polishing techniques? Does the engine benefit from
blueprinting/balancing? Should components be lightened? Is there an EPA legal
header, and does it make sense to consider using it? Does making weight
adjustments to the flywheel result in unacceptable vibration? Who are some
suppliers that I can contact for additional information? Is there an engine
rebuilder in the country that is familiar with these powerplants and can
assist me?

This is simply an information gathering process. If you'd like, I could begin
amassing a database on components and processes available for the big six. I'd
even consider an engine swap to a later (E34) long block if it was felt to be justified.

Please direct your comments, information, or other tidbits to my email address
above and I will get started. No detail is too small. Thanks in advance - I'm
sure I will be talking to you...
