M3 Noise at start up.

I am interested in an M3 '94 vintage, the car looks and goes great 77k miles, 
but at start up there is a rattling noise for about 3-5 seconds which sounds 
like chains..the owner says it's just the starter gear returning after 
startup...anyone else heard of this or knows what this noise is?
