twisting transmission on 95 M3s

I have a '95 M3, and have not heard of the "twisting transmission" problem
mentioned in a recent digest. Will someone bring me up to date on this? My
backup lights don't work, and I suspect a new transmission-mounted switch is
needed. Are these related?
