I had a similar problem with my '92 535i. Turned out it was the thermostat.
Cost about $100 to have fixed. Run the engine until warm, then check the hoses
coming out of the thermostat. There is a valve in the thermostat that is closed
until the engine is warm, then opens to allow coolant to run into the radiator.
If the valve sticks, the hose does not become warm to the touch and the engine
overheats.
