Wipers...whack, whack, whack!

I've got a 1990 535i.  The problem is the winshield
wipers.  Part of the time the wipers work just fine,
thank you, but over half the time, accompanying each
movement of the wipers from vertical to horizontal
(down by the dash) is a loud whack!

It seems like there may be a bad bushing or something,
which is okay timetimes, but allows too much free
play, causing the blades to whack against the car hood
or something.  

Anyone have any ideas?
