'91 325i requiring multiple rack and pinions

Our regional BMW office is mystified as well and
anxious to hear any theories...


My sister is the original owner of a 1991 325i
(manufactured 8/90) which has been cared for
immaculately.  Here's the problem:

2/91 - 2,400 miles, grinding sound when steering,
required new rack and pinion
8/96 - 24,000 miles, same problem, required another
new rack and pinion
12/99 - 81,000 miles, same problem, received a new
pump
12/99 - 81,500 miles, problem persists, required yet
another rack and pinion

BMW is stumped and has not yet been able to do
anything to reassure us the car is truly fixed let
alone that this won't happen again.  A total of 4 rack
and pinions (including the stock one) seems absurd for
a car with only 81,000 miles.  Any thoughts?  Thanks
so much!
