clicking noise (driving me nuts)

here's another plea for some suggestions. pls reply to this address:

car is an 86 528e, started to have this very annoying clicking noise coming 
from the left wheel. thinking it's the bearing since the speed is directly 
proportional to the vehicle's speed. A clicking sound, i thought bearings 
make grinding noise?
noise has been around before i replaced rotor, pads, thrust and control 
arms. no sign of metal to metal contact on parts like the hub or speed 
sensor. what am i missing here? on jacks, the wheel is quiet, no play.
