Oil question

Hi everyone. I'm new to the list and I am having a little trouble moving
around the archives as far as getting info. I just bought a 99 328i and
was told to wait till the car tells you to do any maint, such as oil
changes. Is it true, depending upon driving habits, the oil doesn't have
to be changed for 15K miles? My dealer says this is so but he doesn't
appear to be too knowledgable. He also says I can have it changed as
much as I want but a dealer must do it. Is this true?
