Hello John,

When I was running an E30 325i the local dealer recommended 60k intervals
for a cambelt change. The engine has lasted 440k miles so that figure is
probably safe. I did hear that the belts on the smaller engines are not so
robust and need changing at closer intervals but can't speak from experience.

About belt failure I've no info on BMW belt failure but can tell you that
Peugeot 1.9 diesel cambelts can be expected to fail between 125 and 130k
miles. That is repeatable. :-((
