E28 Rear end clunking

Hi:
My '88 535 is is producing a clunking sound again.  The sound occurs with
the rpm of the rear end (not engine RPM).  The sound is loud on accelaration
and decelaration only.  At cruzing the sound all but goes away.  It is a
medium pitch, and not a grinding sound like bearings might be. This same
thing occured 18 months ago.  I couldn't find the problem then.  Back then I
put the car up on jack stands and ran the car in the forward gears but I
could get it to make no sound.  Amazingly, the sound soon after just went
away, with out me doing a thing!  Now, 1 1/2 years later it is back.  I
almost wish it would just break so I would know what is wrong!  Crazy I
know. I expect the sound will again start to come and go.
Any thoughts on the cause?
