rust from the licese plate light area

Just some info for people with e30s.
my warning light for the license plate light came up
recently.  I thought it was a blow bulb.  I had a
difficult time with the screw holding the light cover.
 When it was out the whole area holding the cover was
rusted.  It seems like a perfect moisture trap.
so if any of you have not looked in this area
recently, may want to check it out.
