E30 - exhaust system question...

Hello netters,
My E30-318 (non catalytic) has a center exhaust muffler (where the
catalyst is usually located). My end muffler is a Sebring Sports muffler,
I was wondering, can the center BMW muffler be taken out of the
system ? or it used for proper timing of the engine ?
