A stab in the dark

Ok, this could be a billion things, but I'm looking for some places to start.
The car: 1986 325es

The situation:
On Saturday I put in a Trunk-mount Sony 10-Disc CD player that plays
through the factory head unit via an RF signal. During the day, everything
looked fine, however when I started it up at night and flipped on the
lights, the Active Check board lit up and the dash lights did not. I
checked it out and realized that Fuse 23 was popping like nobody's
business. Dead short. I've looked through stuff in the back, pulled out
the seats again and looked around for loose wires, etc. I looked behind
the head unit where the RF transmitter is now sitting and didn't see
anything obvious.

The one thing I can't get to is whatever is behind the very back panel of
my E30. You know, the one with the speakers and 3rd brake light? For the
life of me I can't get it loose. I want to make sure that the screws I
used to mount the trunk unit didn't hit anything.

So... any stabs in the dark, previous experiences, etc? I've already been
pulled over twice on account of the fact that fuse 23 also routes to the
right tail-light. It's getting rather annoying.

Thanks in advance,
Robert
