528e: Won't Start

I've got a 1986 528e with 186k miles. I drove it to town today and it
ran fine. Got out of the store and the car wouldn't turn over. Not even
a click when I went to turn the key. The guys at the auto store pushed
the car and we started it by popping the clutch. I was able to drive it
home but it was running quite rough, had a noticeable lack of power, and
trouble idling. I got it home and white smoke was coming out of the
exhaust. Put the volt meter on the battery and it didn't appear to be
charging. Turned the car off and it wouldn't start when tried again.

Please help. I have no idea where to start looking. Any advice is
greatly appreciated.
