Trans Program

I've got a '92 525iT and about twice a week, when I start my car I get a "Trans
Program" indication. I shut off the key and restart and it goes away. If I try
to drive, it starts and stays in 2nd or 3rd gear. Is there anything I can
replace or check without going to the mechanic?
