Air Filter for 318i E36

I know that there has been quite a number of things
said about performance air filters, however, I have an
E36 saloon 318i and am debating the benefit of fitting
a K&N 57i induction kit over a K&N panel filter
element that drops into the airbox.

I have tried out both but find that unlike on any
other car I have tried the difference in power gain
(feel not rolling road tested) is not that different.
The usual induction roar doesn't seem as evident
either. The real problem I have noticed though is the
feeling of being fuel starved at 5000rpm and above.
The gain in torque (pulling power) feels better but
then you seem to lose what you gain by pulling in to
much air and getting a warbling effect.

I live in London, England and the temp. is lower than
most U.S environments but this has not been a problem
on previous cars I have owned.

Does anyone have any experiences with this or advice
on this matter?

Many thanks.
