Fuel Pump

Guys,
Just found out that the fuel pump for my 535 e34 is located inside the fuel
tank and is immersed in gasoline with all the wires and electrical parts. Is
it safe in terms of the possible spark, etc.? Could not be safer to locate
it outside the tank. I mean its like riding the Molotof's coctail or am I
wrong? Please enlighten me on this matter.
