service indicator lights

I just got a '96 328i and will be doing my own service. Two questions; first, 
are the "tools" advertised in Roundel to reset the service indicator easy to 
use?  Second, is maintenance recorded by the cars computer so if I wanted to 
see if the previous owner properly maintained the car it would print out?
