Re: 1986 944 TURBO

Ryan,

I drove an 83 944 through a Rochester, NY winter. It wasn't pretty. The=

front wheel wells filled with snow and rubbed the tires. The fat tires
floated on the snow, and gave no traction. I got blown off by a honda c=
ivic
at 25 mph. I once required a push to get back into my own driveway. I
resorted to the bus. I eventually borrowed a 74 celica that was headed =
for
a field for the winter, and in exchange I kept it running. Uy.

For a budget challenged approach, you might consider a 944NA (non turbo=
)
and a winter car. Series "one" cars should cost about 1/2 the 951you're=

looking at. Everybody says how great the 951 is, and I agree, but the 9=
44
is probably a better beginner car, i.e. more forgiving. Its lighter, an=
d
plenty exciting as is. Plenty of 951 parts around from us nuts, to graf=
t on
as available.

Even w/ 145 HP, the 944 was about double my previous Audi fox (76 HP). =
That
felt huge.

I was at Mosport in 84 with the 944, and after completely re-engineerin=
g
the 951, and taking 10 years to learn to drive it, I'm only now getting=
 the
same sweet feel as the car drifts between cornner in 8, as I did out of=
 the
box with the 944.

Also, a clutch on a 944 my be similar in cost to a 951, but the turbo i=
sn't
there to fail, the header won't crack (don't ask), etc.
