Brake Light Switch

Don't know about the E36, but on my E28 its on the upper end of the brake
pedal just covered by the trim panel in the drivers footwell, if you get on
the floor with a torch you might be able to see if its there before you take
the panel off.

On mine its a release for on push for off affair, i.e under constant
pressure from brake pedal when not breaking.
