I do not have personal experience with Carfax but a friend I know did do a 
search on a car that he was buying because it was ".. a very good deal". The 
car turned out to be a reconstruction title and had many other problems. The 
reconstruction title was not disclosed and he was glad to spend $19.95 or 
whatever they charge.

The free report you get is only how many title changes, liens etc., but it 
may give you just enough information to decide to look further into the deal.
