e28 535i - reverse light sensor

Hi -

I have a an 86 535i manual transmission and the white reverse lights are
not functioning.  It is not the bulbs, as those have been changed.  I am
looking for the reverse light sensor that detects reverse and signals the
lights accordingly.  I have looked around the shifter from the inside of
the car, but have not found it.  Is the sensor under the shifter, or
within the transmission?  ANy help would be appreciated.
