Bentley manual says to first check for a faulty #6 fuse, it should be an
8 amp. Then check the brake light bulbs. The cruise control unit grounds
through the brake lights to the chassis. Pin 9 on the control unit is
the ground connection.

Check operation of the clutch switch (manual tranny cars) and brake
light switch by making continuity checks at the connectors with the
pedals depressed and released. Check that the actuating cable is not
kinked or damaged.

The control unit is located beneath the dashboard to the left of the
steering column, The servo motor is mounted on the forward part of the
of the driver's side fender, in the engine compartment.

My experience with older Bimmers is that corrosion can build up on
electrical connectors, fuses, relay sockets, etc. causing intermittent
operation of vital parts. Time spent cleaning and polishing these
connections is well-invested, IMHO.
