Convertible waterproofing

Did someone ever tried to apply the waterproofing stuff they sell for camping
tents on their convertible top?
Mine is getting old (1991) and it seems to absorb water when not driving(no wind
to remove water from top), sooo if that stuff can help to remove water and seal
at the same time, maybe I won't have spend $2000CAN on a new top.
