Whine from rear when not under load

On my 97 M3 with 17,000 miles on I notice a slight whine from the rear when 
not under load .Most noticeable in third or fourth when taking foot off the 
accel. and allowing engine to slow you down. Can only hear with windows up 
and radio off. The noise has been there since day one. Do any of you exp. the 
same noise and do you have any suggestions? You really have to focus to hear 
this noise but it is there.
