To answer the oil pan question:
The oil pan on my car (E30 325is) is a light alloy. Could be
aluminum, could be aluminum magnesium. Can't say for
sure. The engine block is cast iron, which is a pretty
standard block material.
The oil pan on the 318 and the 325e could be some other
material (like a stamped steel piece).
