<E30> steering wheel (w/airbag) removal

One reply to my flakey wiper query (Thanks, Russ!) suggested I try removing
the wheel and cleaning the contacts and ground connection for the wiper
switch. I'm afraid to try that without some guidance, because my '90 325iX
has an airbag. Bentley won't even show you how, product liability fears I
guess. Anyhow, how dangerous is this, really? I know the consequences of
accidentally triggering the thing are very hazardous, but surely with the
right precautions it can be done safely.

Anyone have experience with this?
