I'm also echoing this to the list, in the hopes others will find the info
useful.

Look on page 28 of your friend's audio manual. It will say "AI" or "I"
at the top of the page.

If you have an I system, it's a drop in replacement. Autotoys and others
have the changers you need. I believe it's a stock Alpine changer. A MD
changer is also available. Disks 1-6 are directly accessable by your
radio - disks 7-10 will play sequentially after disk 6.

In the AI system, the changer will work, but you'll get no sound. The AI
systems have a separate coaxial cable to carry just the audio. Autotoys
has promised a drop in changer with the proper plugs in the near future.

If you have the DSP/Premium audio system all bets are off. I'm not quite
sure if an AI changer (when available) will work, or if you'll have to go
to BMW to get the correct unit.

Of course, you can also go to the dealer. There's a dealer out of the
west coast (Pacfic BMW??) that will sell you a changer at cost.

I've been watching for two months now, and haven't seen anything. I'm also
still waiting for a supercharger kit for this car (:
