Re: 1979 320 ignition problem

Regarding Tim's 1979 320i ignition problem-----

My car is an earlier BMW model, but my next move after
exhausting all convenient remedies would be 'scoping the system. A
mechanic with an oscilloscope will provide a relatively quick answer to a
gremlin of a problem. Even the
most well-intended expert advice is now a guess without a 'scope.

Also,

1) Did the car operate properly than suddenly just not start the next
time, or did the car experience rough running or hesitations prior
to the actual inoperation ?

2) How recently was the car's timing properly tuned up ?

3) Although I have only passing familiarity with fuel injection, how
recently were the
     fuel injectors cleaned ?

4) How about the starter relay, if your car has one ?

4) A basic question but very important---are the spark plug wires
reconnected in the proper order following the repair ? Be sure
to label and triple check the wires.
