The switch is indeed on top of the transmission..and it's a real bugger to
get to...I am in the middle of a clutch change on my son's '87 325is and I
can tell you "exactly" where it is...on top of the trans about 10" to 12"
forward of the shifter hole.
Make sure the connector is ok in the shifter area under the boot before
diving into the job. As far as how much has to come off the car to get to
the switch I can't say...except it must be terribly difficult without getting
in there for a clutch change!
I would think draining the transmission wouldn't be necessary to change the
switch.
