'85 BMW 535i Muffler Question

Hello BMW aficionados,

I will be required to replace the front muffler on the aforementioned
535 soon and would appreciate any advice that might help me with the
decision.
For example, are there performance options (not too interested if the
dollar amount is significant,) better than stock aftermarket options
(stainless steeel?,) etc.  What's the conventional wisdom?  TIA
