Which Bimmer to Buy, 3 or 5 series?

hello again,

i'd like to start by saying thanks for all the great info. i was
surprised by the amount of responses, and how informative your responses
were. i've basically been talked into buying a later model, mid '80's 3
or 5 series. i definitely would like the power of the six cylinders.
like i said previously, i have $4500 or so to spend but could easily
come up with another $1000 or so if the right car presented itself. i'd
like to buy a loaded car with a 5 spd and a six. leather seats are a
plus. i've been looking at the 3 series cars and also the 5 series cars.
i like the larger size of the 5's. what do you guys think? also, what
key factors should i look at and consider when purchasing such a car,
such as their quirks or rust problems and so on. i've never owned a
bimmer, and i wouldn't want to overlook something serious. thanks so
much.
