   My impression is that a 3.0CS in good condition goes for a lot more
than you have to spend.  These cars, which are the 2 dr coupe, are in
the collector car category and thus demanding more than twice the
price you are willing to pay.

  The 3.0Si, on the other hand, is a 4dr sedan with the same
motor. but not being a collector's car goes for a lot less.  With your
budget, you can buy one and have some change left over to do some
major fixing.

   One problem, however, with early '70s BMWs, or other marques, is
they were designed for leaded premimum fuel.  You can't buy that
anymore in the States.  So you might consider using your budget for a
'80s BMW which all have catalytic converters.
