Subject: <all> Crack in Windshield repair/replace

      Greetings -

I have a 4 - 5 inch crack in the lower left hand side of my windshield
      (highway "shrapnel").

The yellow pages is full of ads for windshield repair and replace.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences with a national chain
(or if you live in the Milwaukee area) a local service provider?

      Thank you.

Steven:

Windshield replacement/repair can be a big headache. Personally, I prefer to
repair windshields as the quality and fit of replacements varies. A good
repair job will make the crack all but invisable. Some places will tell you
that repairing such a crack is impossible however, that is simply untrue. I
had a windshield repaired on my old Saab about two years ago and have never
had a problem. My best luck has been with the Novus Franchise. Their should
be a Franchise in your area. If not, I can supply my source in the Chicago
area. A couple of things to keep in mind.

1. If you decide to replace. Remember, in today's cars windshields are and
important part of your cars' STRUCTURE (they are glued-in). A low quality
replacement can compromise structural integrity and possibly be disloged in
an accident (not a pretty picture). Low quality installs with glass that is
not a perfect fit will probably leak (yuck!).

2. If you decide to repair. Get it done now! The longer you wait; the
larger the crack. Also, small amounts of dirt will find its way into the
crack and make the repair more obvious. Also, a good auto glass repair
person will know how to bill your insurance company for the repair so you
don't have to worry about paying for the service.

Good Luck!
