Bilstein shock absorbers

Hello...
I have inherited the faulty right front shock absorber together with my 533i. It
is sport Bilstein. The left one seems to be perfectly fine. They were installed
sometime in late 80's. My question: is it necessary to change both absorbers
simultaneously or I may replace just the bad one?
