whine from the fuel pump -E30

The fuel pump in my 1989 316i has started to make a very strong "
whining " noise, it sounds a lot like the external fuel pump I fitted
into my 68 Mustang. It sounds as if the pump was taken out of the fuel
tank. Could it be its time for a replacement ? Anybody had any
experiences with fuel pumps sounding ? The car has only 45,000 kms. but
maybe time has taken its toll ?

Any help is appreciated.
