<E28> stuck hood latch

I cannot get the hood of my 1988 535 to release completely.  Upon pulling 
the release lever in the interior, only 1 of the hood latches is released.  
The manuals I have consulted say to remove the radiator grilles and operate 
the latches with a screwdriver.  The grilles are supposedly held in place 
with clips.  I am reluctant to pry at the grilles for fear of breaking them 
or the clips.  Has anyone done this?  Have you any 
suggestion/recommendation?  TIA.
