Vanos engine noise (E39)?

A friend own an (E39)97 528i w/AT, mileage under 30k. The tapping noise
in the engine occur all the time (cold or warm). Has anybody experience
the same problem? Does it sound like a valve noise? What causes this
tapping noise? Is this a common problem on VANOS engine? Your input is
appreciated. TIA.
