<E30> Bad Idle

Hi all,
I have a 316 (1880cc carburettor model) and it has developed a problem at idle
The symptoms are:
At idle it seem to drop to nearly 500rpm, (normal idle about 850rpm)
More annoying though is when the car is not yet up to full operating temp i.e. after about 6 miles
it cuts out when I come to a halt at a junction (same place every morning!).
has anyone any suggestions on what to do? i have checked all the vacuum hosesaround the carb and
they seem fine.
