82 633csi idle

the idle on my 1982 633csi (5-speed) jumped unexpectedly from around
1000rpm to around 2000+rpm, where it now idles on a regular basis.
however, when the car is in gear, it proceeds to it's normal rpms. then
in neutral, it returns to the high rpms, which, in turn, is causing the
engine temp to climb. does anybody know why this happened & how it can
be fixed to idle at it's normal rate? thanx in advance.
