<E36> Profile gasket failure question

Is the 1.8l from the '95 318ti subject to the infamous Profile gasket
failure?  A friend of mine had her engine die and we are replacing it with a
used engine also from a 318ti.  The way she described what happened to the
engine sounded suspiciously like profile gasket failure.  If they are
subject to this is there a fix to prevent it from happening to her new
engine??
